Leather is one of the best materials for laser work. It cuts cleanly, engraves with beautiful contrast, and the laser seals the edge as it cuts โ no fraying. The results look professional with minimal post-processing.
One important safety note before anything else: never laser cut or engrave chrome-tanned leather. Chrome tanning uses chromium compounds that produce toxic hexavalent chromium fumes when burned. Use vegetable-tanned (veg-tan) leather for laser work. Veg-tan leather engraves and cuts without hazardous fumes (though you still need ventilation).
Veg-tan leather is firm, stiff when dry, and has a natural tan or light brown colour. It takes water marks and tool impressions easily. Chrome-tan leather is softer, more flexible, and often has an even, uniform colour. Most coloured or dyed fashion leather is chrome-tanned. If you are not sure, buy from a supplier that explicitly labels it as veg-tan for laser use.

The laser seals leather edges as it cuts, which prevents fraying. For the cleanest results, use air assist and keep the leather flat on the bed โ leather tends to curl, especially thinner pieces. Pin or tape the corners before cutting.
If you are cutting small pieces like keychains or earrings, a jig helps you position identical pieces consistently for batch production. Cut a pocket in a piece of scrap material that fits your leather blank snugly, then place each blank in the jig for cutting and engraving.
Veg-tan leather engraves with a dark brown to black mark depending on depth. More power and slower speed produce a deeper, darker mark. For most applications โ names, logos, monograms โ a single medium-power pass gives excellent results.
After engraving, you can apply a leather conditioner or beeswax to the piece. Conditioning darkens the un-engraved areas slightly while the engraved marks stay dark, increasing the contrast. Saddle soap or leather oil both work well.
