What kind of box does this generate?
A 6-sided rectangular box with interlocking finger joints on every edge. Pick outer width, depth, and height, your material thickness, and kerf. The tool nests all 6 faces (or 5 if you choose open-top) onto a single SVG sheet with cut paths stroked in red. Import into LightBurn, xTool Creative Space, LaserGRBL, or any laser software.
Why do my joints come out loose (or too tight)?
That's the kerf. The laser burns away material around every cut line, so your finger tabs end up narrower than drawn. Loose = your kerf setting is too low; tight = too high. Measure your actual kerf first with our Kerf Calibration Generator and plug that value in. On 3mm basswood with a diode laser, kerf is usually 0.15–0.25mm. On acrylic it's often higher.
What finger size should I pick?
A good rule is 3× the material thickness. For 3mm plywood, 9mm fingers. Too small and cutting takes forever and the fingers get fragile; too large and the joints look chunky. The tool auto-rounds to an odd number of fingers per edge so the pattern is symmetric.
Are the outer dimensions exact?
Yes. The W × D × H you enter are the outer dimensions of the assembled box. Every face is cut to fit within those dimensions — no tabs poke beyond the nominal footprint. Notches are cut inward from each edge, so the sheet outlines match the face sizes exactly.
Can I export DXF?
SVG for v1. The output is millimeter-scaled so LightBurn and xTool CS will import at correct size. If you need DXF, run the output SVG through our DXF ↔ SVG Converter. A native DXF export is planned.
What about a lid, dividers, or hinges?
V1 is a plain closed or open-top box. Dividers, sliding lids, and captive hinges are on the roadmap. For a lift-off lid now, just generate two open-top boxes of slightly different footprints.
