Leather is one of the most satisfying materials to engrave. Done right, the burn mark is crisp, slightly raised from the shrinkage, and has that distinct smell that tells you it's real. Done wrong, you get a shiny melted mess — especially if what you have is faux leather rather than genuine.
The most important thing before you adjust any settings is knowing what you're actually working with. Genuine leather and faux leather respond completely differently to laser energy, and treating them the same is how you ruin a batch of blanks.
Genuine leather is a natural organic material. It vaporizes cleanly under laser energy, leaving a dark engraved mark with a slight texture change. The result is permanent, professional-looking, and improves with handling.
Faux leather is PVC or PU-coated fabric. PVC releases hydrogen chloride gas when lasered — toxic, corrosive, and bad for your machine's optics. PU faux leather is safer but still melts rather than vaporizes cleanly, leaving shiny or bubbly edges. If you must use faux leather, confirm it's PU-based, run it with full ventilation, and keep power lower than you think you need.
Vegetable-tanned leather gives the best engrave results. The natural tannins produce a dark, high-contrast mark. Chrome-tanned leather engraves but the mark is lighter and less defined. Suede and nubuck engrave from the surface down and lose their texture — acceptable for some applications, not for others.
| Material | Operation | Speed (mm/min) | Power | Passes | Air Assist |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Veg-tan leather 3mm | Engrave | 2500–4000 | 40–60% | 1 | No |
| Veg-tan leather 3mm | Cut | 200–350 | 90–100% | 2–3 | Yes |
| Chrome-tan leather 2mm | Engrave | 2000–3500 | 50–70% | 1 | No |
| Faux leather (PU) | Engrave | 3000–5000 | 25–40% | 1 | Yes |
For engraving, turn air assist off or to minimum. Air assist disperses the heat before it fully penetrates the surface fiber — you'll get lighter, less defined marks. For cutting leather, air assist helps clear residue and reduces re-ignition.
| Material | Operation | Speed (mm/s) | Power | Passes | Air Assist |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Veg-tan leather 3mm | Engrave | 200–350 | 15–25% | 1 | No |
| Veg-tan leather 3mm | Cut | 20–30 | 55–70% | 1–2 | Yes |
| Chrome-tan leather 2mm | Engrave | 250–400 | 12–20% | 1 | No |
| Faux leather (PU) | Engrave | 300–500 | 10–15% | 1 | Optional |
CO₂ lasers engrave leather faster and with less power than diode lasers. The 10.6μm wavelength is absorbed very efficiently by organic material. Start at the lower end of the power range — leather scorches easily and you can always go darker, but you can't undo an over-burned piece.
Masking tape on the surface before engraving catches residue and keeps the surrounding leather clean. Peel it off after the job. This is especially useful for large fill engraves where smoke residue would otherwise stain the surrounding material.
Leather oils can affect the engrave. Heavily conditioned or oiled leather may engrave lighter than dry leather of the same thickness. If you're getting inconsistent results across a batch, check whether the material has been treated. Dry, natural veg-tan from a reliable supplier gives the most consistent results.
Photo engraving on leather works well at high DPI (300–500) with power around 20–30% on a CO₂ machine. The natural texture of the leather adds to portrait work rather than detracting from it. Test a small area before running the full design — the right DPI setting depends on your specific leather's surface texture.
Laser engraved leather sells well in a few specific categories: keychains, wallets, journal covers, patches, pet collars, and personalised cuffs. Small items with names or initials are the easiest to batch. Business card holders engraved with a company logo are popular corporate gifts. The margins are good because leather blanks are inexpensive and the personalisation commands a premium.
The settings database has community-tested numbers for genuine leather across most popular machines. If you're new to leather engraving, look up your machine model and start from what others have found before running your own tests.
"Used it with a Glowforge — engraved beautifully with no changes. I will be purchasing more digital downloads from this shop."
