3mm basswood plywood is the default starting material for most laser cutters. It is light, affordable, cuts cleanly, and engraves with good contrast. If you are getting started or testing a new machine, this is the material to start with.
The settings below are starting points. Every sheet of basswood varies slightly in density and moisture content. Always run a test cut on a scrap piece before committing to your main design.
The goal for cutting is clean through-cuts with minimal char on the edges. Air assist makes a significant difference — it blows combustion gases away from the cut and keeps the beam path clear.
| Machine | Speed | Power | Passes | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| xTool D1 Pro 20W | 3000 mm/min | 80% | 2 | Air assist on |
| xTool S1 40W | 5000 mm/min | 65% | 1 | Air assist on |
| Sculpfun S30 Pro 33W | 4200 mm/min | 68% | 1 | Air assist recommended |
| Sculpfun S9 10W | 1500 mm/min | 90% | 3 | Slow; mask surface to reduce char |
| Ortur Laser Master 3 10W | 1500 mm/min | 90% | 3 | Air assist reduces flare |
| OMTech 40W CO2 | 20 mm/s | 55% | 1 | Clean cuts with air assist |
| Glowforge Basic 40W | 18 mm/s | 58% | 1 | Proofgrade basswood ≈ medium maple settings |
| Glowforge Pro 45W | 22 mm/s | 52% | 1 | Adjust for sheet density variance |
| Boss LS-1630 100W | 35 mm/s | 30% | 1 | High power CO2 — test on scrap first |
Engraving basswood produces a warm brown colour that darkens with more power or slower speed. For photo engrave or fine detail, use higher DPI (300+). For bold text and simple shapes, 254 DPI is sufficient and faster.
| Machine | Speed | Power | DPI | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| xTool D1 Pro 20W | 6000 mm/min | 55% | 254 | Good contrast; go slower for darker burn |
| xTool S1 40W | 8000 mm/min | 38% | 254 | Fast engrave; increase power for darker result |
| Sculpfun S30 Pro 33W | 7500 mm/min | 42% | 254 | |
| Sculpfun S9 10W | 4000 mm/min | 65% | 254 | Lower speed compensates for lower power |
| OMTech 40W CO2 | 300 mm/s | 16% | 300 | CO2 engraves very fast; low power sufficient |
| Glowforge Basic 40W | 270 mm/s | 18% | 300 | |
| Glowforge Pro 45W | 310 mm/s | 15% | 300 |
3mm basswood plywood is not a standardised product. Sheets from different suppliers vary in actual thickness (often anywhere from 2.8mm to 3.2mm), glue content between the layers, and moisture level. A freshly opened pack can behave differently from sheets stored in a damp space for a few weeks.
The practical fix: cut your settings test grid from the same batch of material you are using for your project. If you switch suppliers or open a new pack mid-project, do a quick test cut before running the full job.
The main cause of charred or rough cut edges is the beam dwelling too long on the wood surface. This happens with too-slow speed, too-high power, or too many passes at full power. On a diode laser, it helps to run two passes at moderate power rather than one pass at maximum. On CO₂, air assist does most of the work.
Masking tape applied to the top surface reduces smoke staining on the face of the material. The tape catches most of the smoke residue and peels off cleanly after cutting. This is especially worthwhile for engraved pieces where the background needs to stay clean.
Basswood is the most common material for laser-cut gifts because the engrave contrast looks professional without requiring any post-processing. Names, dates, and simple illustrations engrave crisply at 4 inches and up. For fine detail like small text or portrait photos, use 300 DPI or higher and slow down slightly.
If you want a consistent brown tone across a large engraved area, keep your settings consistent and ensure the sheet is flat on the bed. Warped sheets cause the focal distance to vary and produce uneven burns. Pin or tape down any warped sheets before engraving.
