Alder is a soft, even-textured hardwood with a pale color similar to birch. It engraves cleanly and cuts well, making it a good alternative to basswood for decorative work.
Less common than basswood but behaves very similarly. Settings for basswood usually work as a starting point. Takes stain well after engraving.
